Planning a beverage launch: what to settle early

Formula and process

Acidity, sugar content, preservatives and the heat treatment you plan to use all shape shelf life and the equipment required. The same drink can sometimes be produced more than one way, and each route affects cost and lead time. Have your formula, any lab results and your target shelf life ready, and ask any co-packer which process they would recommend for your product and why.

Storage and distribution

Decide early whether your drink is shelf-stable, refrigerated or frozen. It affects packaging, warehousing and freight costs, and some products that cannot be made shelf-stable must carry storage instructions on the label.

Labelling in Canada

Prepackaged beverages generally need a common name and net quantity in metric units on the principal display panel, an ingredient list with priority allergens and added sulphites declared, the dealer’s name and principal place of business, a Nutrition Facts table unless an exemption applies, and mandatory information in English and French. Front-of-package nutrition symbol requirements have applied since January 1, 2026; check your Nutrition Facts values against Health Canada’s thresholds for sugars, sodium and saturated fat before you print. We can assist with label compliance as part of your project.

Licensing

If your drink will be sold across provincial borders or exported, the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations require a licence for the businesses that manufacture, package or label it. Our guide on how to choose a co-packer in Canada explains who needs what.

Questions to ask any beverage co-packer

Whoever you work with, these questions help you compare partners on more than price:

  • Which beverage formats and container sizes can your line handle today?
  • Which filling or heat-treatment approach would you recommend for my formula, and why?
  • Can you source the bottles, closures or pouches, or should I supply them?
  • How do you check fill level, seal or cap integrity, and label placement?
  • How are lots defined and coded on each unit?
  • Which certificates do you hold that my retailers ask for? Ask to see the current certificate.
  • Can you store finished goods and ship to my distributor or retailer?

Our co-packer selection checklist goes deeper on facility visits, sample runs and contracts.

Why one partner for packing, packaging and freight

Drinks are heavy, and every extra hand-off between a filler, a packaging supplier and a warehouse adds freight, scheduling risk and room for error. Keeping packaging sourcing, co-packing, warehousing and shipping with one team means one schedule, one point of contact, and fewer pallets moving between sites. That is the model COPACK Canada is built around.
