Private label vs. co-packing: which model fits?
The two terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe different arrangements. Provincial guidance on co-packing, such as Alberta’s, draws the line like this: in co-packing, the brand owns the recipe and the manufacturer produces it to the brand’s specification; in private label, the manufacturer’s product is made and sold under the client’s label.
| Co-packing | Private label | |
|---|---|---|
| Who owns the recipe | You | Typically the manufacturer |
| Speed to launch | Slower: development and scale-up come first | Often faster, because the product exists |
| Differentiation | High: your formula is unique | Lower: similar products may be sold by others |
| Switching suppliers | Easier, since you own the formula | Harder; may mean reformulating |
| Your workload | More responsibility for specs and testing | Less development work |
Many brands start with private label to test demand, then move to a custom formula once the product proves itself. If you already have a recipe, see food co-packing or sauce co-packing instead.
Questions to settle before you sign a private label deal
- Exclusivity. Will the same product be sold to other brands, and in which channels?
- Specifications. Get the product specification in writing: ingredients, allergens, shelf life and packaging.
- Label responsibility. Who prepares and approves the label, and who holds any licence needed to label the product for sale across provinces?
- Minimums. Ask for the per-run minimum and any packaging minimums separately, since printed packaging often sets the real floor.
- Price breaks. Request pricing at two or three volume tiers so you can plan margins as you grow.
- Exit terms. What happens to leftover packaging and inventory if you change suppliers?
Our guide to co-packing costs and MOQs breaks down what goes into a quote, and how to choose a co-packer in Canada covers the due diligence to do on any manufacturing partner.
Branding your private label packaging
Your packaging is where a private label product becomes your brand. A stock pouch with a printed label keeps first-run minimums low; custom printed pouches or film give a finished retail look once volumes justify them. For custom printed pouches, our partner Lion Packaging focuses on custom printed packaging, and ready-made stand-up and mylar pouches are available from Mylar Bags Canada.
How a private label project runs
- Brief. Tell us the product you want under your brand, the packaging you have in mind, the certificates your buyers expect and your target volume, through the quote form.
- Consultation. We work through your product requirements, target audience, and packaging needs, and agree the specification.
- Sourcing. Ingredients and packaging are sourced to that specification, including pouches, films or child-resistant formats where needed.
- Labelling and compliance. Your brand goes on the label, and we assist with label compliance for the Canadian market.
- Production and quality assurance. Every batch is inspected to ensure it meets our high standards and your expectations.
- Delivery. Finished goods ship through our freight and shipping services, or are held with inventory management and warehousing.
The process mirrors our standard co-packing process, with less development work on your side because the formula already exists.
